Boken beskriver de britiske flyavdelingene 19 og 65 Skvadrons innsats fra flystasjonen Peterhead i Skottland våren 1945 frem til krigens slutt. Begge skvadronene var utstyrt med amerikanske P-51 Mustang Mk. III og IV jagerfly. Disse ble brukt til å eskortere britiske Mosquito og Beaufightere fly over Nordsjøen mot mål langs kysten av Norge, i første rekke skip i tysk tjeneste og fiendtlige jagerfly. I alt syv av Mustang-flyverne fra begge avdelinger forteller om innsatsen. Man får lese om dagligliv, ulykker, tokt og luftkamper, forholdet til andre avdelinger, personligheter i skvadronene og mye mer. Blant annet beskrives et helt tokt fra start til slutt. Flere dramatiske hendelser, som luftkampene over Førdefjorden 9. februar (Svarte fredag) og over Telemark 11. april, er omtalt. To skvadronsjefer og en Flight-sjef er blant dem som har bidratt til boken, dessuten en tysk Staffel-sjef og en tysk jagerflyver. I bokens slutt får man møte flyveteranene i nyere tid og kan se bilder fra Peterhead etter krigen.
The book describes the operations of the British air units 19 and 65 Squadron at RAF Peterhead in Scotland spring 1945 – until war’s end. Both squadrons were equipped with American P-51 Mustang Mk. III and IV fighters. These were used to escort British Mosquitos and Beaufighters across the North Sea towards targets in Norway, primarely shipping and enemy fighters. In all seven Mustang pilots from both units tell about their war service. The reader can read about daily life, accidents, sorties and air battles, relations to other units, personalities in the squadrons and much more. Severel dramatic events, like the air battles above the Førde Fiord on February 9th (Black Friday) and above Telemark on April 11th are described. Two squadron commanders and one Flight Leader are among those who have contributed to the book, as well as two German fighter pilots including one Staffel commander. At the end of the book the squadron veterans in recent times are presented, as well as photographs from Peterhead after the war.
