Ut i felt før invasjonen av Normandie

Femte bind i «Spitfire Saga»-serien dekker perioden november 1943–juni 1944 med historien om Norges to jagerskvadroner under 2. Verdenskrig.

Into the field prior to the invasion of Normandy

The fifth volume in the «Spitfire Saga» series covers the period from November 1943 until June 1944 of the history of Norway’s two fighter squadrons during the 2nd World War. This volume contains more special chapters than earlier, about dicipline and punishment, the «November Rebellion», The Great Escape, Crown Prince Olav’s visit to  the squadrons, the invasion day June 6th 1944 and about weddings and war widows. Noteworthy segments are also the ground crew’s own photographs, film sequences from 1942–1943, the forming of 132 Airfield/Wing, air control and drop tanks, and the shooting down of the German’s largest bomber, the Heinkel He 177 and a V1 «Flying Bomb» (for the first time documented trhough film images). Volume V also describes flying accidents and the loss of several pilots; Knut Bache near Paris, Otto Treider in the English Channel and Leif Lundsten outside the coast of Normandy. Advanced Landing Ground on the Continent are documented, as well as Bjørn Bjørnstad’s collision with a high tension cable, life on the airfield Bognor Regis, the fighter pilot’s first bombing sortie and how the ground crews construckted their own bomb trolley. One can read about  squadron parties and squadron tancards, about when 132 Wing was filmed and ended up in the news, about the desert pilot Kåre Kopperud, the Field Chaplain Sverre Eika, the movie Star Clark Gable, the British fighter ace Adolph «Sailor» Malan, a true friend of the Norwegians, and in addition about four new squadron commanders.
