Beskrivelse:

Her økte flyvertapene dramatisk.

Description:

Winter war, victory and home-coming

The seventh and final volume of «Spitfire Saga» contains the final half year of the history of Norway’s two fighter squadrons during the 2nd World War, from December 22nd 1944 until May 22nd 1945. Under the threath of a German offensive 132 (Norwegian) Wing celebrated Christmas 1944 at Woensdrecht, their first base in the Netherlands. With loaded rifles and a steel helmet the crews walked around the Christmas three singing «Deilig er jorden» (Lovely is the Earth). Then followed December 29th, when 331 Squadron alone lost four pilots but also shot down 15–16 aircraft. On January 1st followed the German air attack on several Allied airfields. Winter coldness and passing V1 Flying Bombs at low altitude above their camp resulted in great strain, especially for the ground crews. At the same time snow fell making it both sour and cold as the fighter aircraft for the most part were serviced out-door.

At the Wing’s next base Schijndel the personnel was first accommodated in a monestery before tents again were put to use. Here the losses of pilots again rose dramatically. 332 Squadron was hit particularely hard. Then followed the Allies crossing of the Rhine. During their free time at Twente the personnel made excursions to newly liberated areas and towns in Germany. April 21st saw the last operations of the fighter units. Soon there was the return to England and the former Air Station of RAF North Weald, with victory celebrations in London, Epping and the streets of Edinburgh. On May 22nd the Norwegian fighters crossed the North Sea, had a stop-over at Sola airfield/Stavanger before they continued along the coast to Oslo/Gardermoen where they were received by Crown Prince Olav.
