Beskrivelse

Description:

From huge losses to air supremacy

In may 1943 the Norwegian fighter squadrons in United Kingdom lost on an average one pilot almost every third day. In this way the period May to October 1943, which is covered in «Spitfire Saga» Volume IV, started off. But not everybody who was shot down fell or was captured by the Germans. Three Norwegians who ended up on enemy soil made it back to freedom. In the sky Captain Svein Heglund of 332 Squadron continually achieved new air victories, which would make him into Norway’s leading fighter ace with officially 16 air victories, unofficially 20–21. The squadrons were also visited by King Haakon; they participated during the Allies mock invasion «Operation» Starkey in September, and were filmed. All while the ground crews, who toiled on the ground, dreamed of getting into the air themselves.
