Boken beskriver tilblivelsen av det amerikanske sjøflyet Northrop N-3PB i Hawthorne ved Los Angeles i 1940, treningen med flyet i Vancouver og Toronto, Canada, og etableringen av Norges første krigsskvadron på Island i april 1941.

Avdelingen var bemannet av personell fra Marinens Flygevåpen, og ble forlagt tre steder: A-Flight i Reykjavik, B-Flight i Akureyri og C-Flight i Budareyri (Reydarfjördur).

Boken beskriver krigsinnsatsen med flyangrep mot fiendtlige fly og ubåter, gjennomføring av et typisk tokt med patruljering for Atlanterhavskonvoiene, dagliglivet på bakken, kontakten med islendingene, klimatiske forhold med snø, kulde, regn og en orkan, teknisk vedlikehold, flytypen N-3PB, ulykker og tap, bergingen av ett av flyene i 1979 med påfølgende restaurering og roll-out, og overlevering til Norge i 1981.

Boken inneholder over 850 bilder inkludert 19 fargebilder fra 1941. Videre egne sider med mange portretter av flyvere, navigatører, telegrafister og en del bakkepersonell. 26 krigsveteraner, 25 menn og en kvinne, forteller i boken. Alle falne er gitt egen omtale. Mange av skvadronens medlemmer i bildene (men ikke alle) er blitt navngitt. Det er egne sammendrag av hvert kapittel på engelsk.

The book describes the making of the American seaplane Northrop N-3PB at Hawthorne near Los Angeles in 1940, the training with the aircraft at Vancouver and Toronto, Canada, and the forming of Norway’s first Air Force squadron in Iceland in April 1941. The unit was manned by personnel of The Royal Norwegian Navy Air Force and was located three places in Iceland: A-Flight in Reykjavik, B-Flight in Akureyri and C-Flight in Budareyri (Reydarfjördur).

The book describes the war effort with air attacks on enemy aircraft and submarines, the execution of a typical sortie patrolling for the Atlantic convoys, daily life of the ground, contact with the Icelanders, climatic conditions with snow, coldness, rain and a hurricane, technical maintenance, the aircraft type N-3PB, accidents and losses, the salvage of a one of the N-3PB aircraft in 1979, with subsequent restoration and roll-out, and delivery to Norway in 1981.

The book contains more than 850 photographs including 19 colour images from 1941. There are separate pages with many portrait photographs of pilots, navigators, radio operators and ground staff. 26 war veterans, 25 men and one woman, are telling their stories in the book. All fallen have a separate description. Many of the members of the squadron in images (but not all) have been identified. There are separate summaries of all chapters in English.
